Let Him reign in your life

If we hope to demonstrate the level of excellence modeled by Jesus Christ, then we'll have to come to terms with the kingdom we are going to serve: the eternal kingdom our Lord told us too seek(Matt. 6:33) or the temporal kingdom of today.

Generally speaking, God's kingdom is a synonym for God's rule. Those who chose to live in His kingdom(though still very much alive on Planet earth) choose to live under His authority.

For centuries, God has been at work reestablishing His ruleship: Jesus' words describe the problem: " No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and despise the other" (Matt. 6:24)

The kingdom is invisible realm where God rules as supreme authority. Only by letting him reign in your life you can experience true excellence.

A must-have tool

A dear friend has been my inspiration when it comes to loving and caring for others. Everyday, he used to send me an e-mail, he leaves a note of encouragement- a reminder of how much Jesus loves me at that very hour. He reminded me that God is at work in every situation according to His purpose and plan and it is always for our good, whether we see it or not. The grace of God was plainly evident in my friend's life.

But one day, I accidentally deleted his precious e-mails. I knew for a fact that recovering deleted e-mails is not an easy task, sometimes it isn't possible. The best way I believe is to call my friend through his cellphone and ask him the best solution I can get. Right at that moment, he recommended the remosoftware site wherein I purchased a tool for restoring my accidentally deleted mail. With the help of Outlook Mail Recovery I have recovered the message. It allows fully automatic operation, and recovers my deleted messages quickly and efficiently. What a great product! I get all my emails back. It is a must-have tool for restoring accidentally deleted mail.

Now there is no reason for me not to preserve all my dearest friend messages. Believe it or not, his messages serve as an instrument for me to deepen my faith to our almighty God. Sometimes we need an angel of encouragement and we all need to be encourager as well. May we too have hope and healing in our wings for those who hurt.

tomorrow's Gospel: Trust and obey the Lord as Mary did

Scripture: Matthew 1:1-16, 18-23 (alternate reading: Luke 6:12-19)
1 The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham.

2 Abraham was the father of Isaac, and Isaac the father of Jacob, and Jacob the father of Judah and his brothers,

3 and Judah the father of Perez and Zerah by Tamar, and Perez the father of Hezron, and Hezron the father of Ram,

4 and Ram the father of Ammin'adab, and Ammin'adab the father of Nahshon, and Nahshon the father of Salmon,

5 and Salmon the father of Bo'az by Rahab, and Bo'az the father of Obed by Ruth, and Obed the father of Jesse,

6 and Jesse the father of David the king. And David was the father of Solomon by the wife of Uri'ah,

7 and Solomon the father of Rehobo'am, and Rehobo'am the father of Abi'jah, and Abi'jah the father of Asa,

8 and Asa the father of Jehosh'aphat, and Jehosh'aphat the father of Joram, and Joram the father of Uzzi'ah,

9 and Uzzi'ah the father of Jotham, and Jotham the father of Ahaz, and Ahaz the father of Hezeki'ah,

10 and Hezeki'ah the father of Manas'seh, and Manas'seh the father of Amos, and Amos the father of Josi'ah,

11 and Josi'ah the father of Jechoniah and his brothers, at the time of the deportation to Babylon.

12 And after the deportation to Babylon: Jechoni'ah was the father of She-al'ti-el, and She-al'ti-el the father of Zerub'babel,

13 and Zerub'babel the father of Abi'ud, and Abi'ud the father of Eli'akim, and Eli'akim the father of Azor,

14 and Azor the father of Zadok, and Zadok the father of Achim, and Achim the father of Eli'ud,

15 and Eli'ud the father of Elea'zar, and Elea'zar the father of Matthan, and Matthan the father of Jacob,

16 and Jacob the father of Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom Jesus was born, who is called Christ.

18 Now the birth of Jesus Christ took place in this way. When his mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child of the Holy Spirit;

19 and her husband Joseph, being a just man and unwilling to put her to shame, resolved to divorce her quietly.

20 But as he considered this, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, "Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit;

21 she will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins."

22 All this took place to fulfil what the Lord had spoken by the prophet: 23 "Behold, a virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and his name shall be called Emmanuel" (which means, God with us).

Reflections
Do you rejoice in the promises of God and trust in his saving plan for your life? There is a long venerable tradition among many Christians of celebrating the birth of Mary, the mother of Jesus our Savior, on this day. Her birth prepared for our redemption in Jesus Christ.
Matthew begins his gospel with the geneology of Jesus from Abraham's lineage through the line of David, King of Israel. Matthew concludes his geneology by stating that both Mary, Jesus' mother and Joseph, his foster father, came from the line of David. Mary was asked to assume in faith a burden of tremendous responsibility. It had never been heard of before that a child could be born without a natural father.
Mary was asked to accept this miraculous exception to the laws of nature. That required faith and trust. Second, Mary was not yet married. Pregnancy outside of wedlock was not tolerated in those days. Mary was only espoused to Joseph, and such an engagement had to last for a whole year. She was asked to assume a great risk. She could have been rejected by Joseph, by her family, by all her own people. Mary knew that Joseph and her family would not understand without revelation from God. She nonetheless believed and trusted in God's promises.
Joseph, a just and God-fearing man, believed the message given to him to take Mary as his wife and to accept the child in her womb as the promised Messiah. Like Mary, Joseph is a model of faith for us. He is a faithful witness and servant of God's unfolding plan of redemption. Are you willing to trust and obey the Lord as Mary and Joseph did?
What is the significance of Matthew's genealogy? His genealogy is arranged in three sections portraying three great stages in the spiritual history of the people of the old covenant. The first stage begins with Abraham, the father of the chosen people, and ends with David, God's anointed King. The second stage takes us to the exile of God's people in Babylon. This is the period of Israel's shame and disaster due to her unfaithfulness. The third stage takes us to Jesus, God's anointed Messiah. Jesus the Messiah is the direct descent of Abraham and David, and the rightful heir to David's throne.
God in his mercy fulfilled his promises to Abraham and to David that he would send a Savior and a King to rule over the house of Israel and to deliver them from their enemies. Jesus is the fulfillment of all God's promises. He is the hope not only for the people of the Old Covenant but for all nations as well. He is the Savior of the world. In him we receive adoption into a royal priesthood and holy nation as sons and daughters of the living God (see 1 Peter 1:9). Do you recognize your spiritual genealogy and do you accept God as your Father and Jesus as the sovereign King and Lord of your life?

tomorrow's Gospel: Worship we owe to God

Scripture: Luke 6:6-11
6 On another Sabbath, when he entered the synagogue and taught, a man was there whose right hand was withered.

7 And the scribes and the Pharisees watched him, to see whether he would heal on the Sabbath, so that they might find an accusation against him.

8 But he knew their thoughts, and he said to the man who had the withered hand, "Come and stand here." And he rose and stood there.

9 And Jesus said to them, "I ask you, is it lawful on the Sabbath to do good or to do harm, to save life or to destroy it?"

10 And he looked around on them all, and said to him, "Stretch out your hand." And he did so, and his hand was restored.

11 But they were filled with fury and discussed with one another what they might do to Jesus.

Reflections
What is God's intention for the commandment, keep holy the Sabbath (Exodus 20:8; Deut. 5:12)? The scribes and Pharisees wanted to catch Jesus in the act of breaking the Sabbath ritual so they might accuse him of breaking God's law. In a few penetrating words Luke records that Jesus knew their thoughts. They were filled with fury and contempt for Jesus because they put their own thoughts of right and wrong above God. They were ensnared in their own legalism because they did not understand or see the purpose of God. Jesus shows their fallacy by pointing to God's intention for the Sabbath: to do good and to save life rather than to do evil or to destroy life.

What is the significance of Jesus' healing the man with the withered hand? Ambrose, the 4th century bishop of Milan who was instrumental in bringing Augustine of Hippo to the Christian faith, comments on this miracle: "Then you heard the words of the Lord, saying, “Stretch forth your hand.” That is the common and universal remedy. You who think that you have a healthy hand beware lest it is withered by greed or by sacrilege.

Hold it out often. Hold it out to the poor person who begs you. Hold it out to help your neighbor, to give protection to a widow, to snatch from harm one whom you see subjected to unjust insult. Hold it out to God for your sins. The hand is stretched forth; then it is healed. Jeroboam’s hand withered when he sacrificed to idols; then it stretched out when he entreated God."

Why do Christians celebrate Sunday as the Lord's Day? Most importantly, we celebrate it to commemorate God's work of redemption in Jesus Christ and the new work of creation accomplished through Christ's death and resurrection (2 Corinthians 5:17). God's action is a model for us. If God "rested and was refreshed" on the seventh day, we, too, ought to "rest" and let others, especially the poor, "be refreshed" (see Exodus 31:17; 23:12). Taking "our sabbath rest" is a way of expressing honor to God for all that he has done for us. Such "rest" however does not exempt us from our love for our neighbor.

If we truly love the Lord above all else, then the love of God will overflow to love of neighbor as well. Saint Augustine of Hippo said: "The charity of truth seeks holy leisure; the necessity of charity accepts just work." How can we make Sunday a day holy to the Lord? First, by refraining from unnecessary work and from activities that hinder the worship we owe to God. We can also perform works of mercy, such as humble service of the sick, the infirm, and the elderly. And we ought to seek appropriate relaxation of mind and body as well.

The joy of the Lord's Day is a great gift to refresh and strengthen us in our love of God and of neighbor (Nehemiah 8:10). Do you know the joy of the Lord and do you find rest and refreshment in celebrating the Lord's Day?

tomorrow's Gospel: To love as Jesus loves

Scripture: Mark 7:31-37
31 Then he returned from the region of Tyre, and went through Sidon to the Sea of Galilee, through the region of the Decap'olis.

32 And they brought to him a man who was deaf and had an impediment in his speech; and they besought him to lay his hand upon him.

33 And taking him aside from the multitude privately, he put his fingers into his ears, and he spat and touched his tongue;

34 and looking up to heaven, he sighed, and said to him, "Eph'phatha," that is, "Be opened."

35 And his ears were opened, his tongue was released, and he spoke plainly.

36 And he charged them to tell no one; but the more he charged them, the more zealously they proclaimed it.

37 And they were astonished beyond measure, saying, "He has done all things well; he even makes the deaf hear and the dumb speak."

Reflections
Do you expect the Lord to treat you well? Whatever Jesus did, he did well. He demonstrated both the beauty and goodness of God in his actions. When Jesus heals a man who is both deaf and a stutterer he shows his considerateness for this man's predicament. Jesus takes him aside privately, not doubt to remove him from embarrassment with a noisy crowd of gawkers. He puts his fingers into his ears and he touches his tongue with his own spittle to physically identify with this man's infirmity and to awaken faith in him. With a word of command the poor man's ears were opened, his tongue was released, and he spoke plainly.

What is the significance of Jesus putting his fingers into the man’s ears? Gregory the Great from the 6th century writes: “The Spirit is called the finger of God. When the Lord puts his fingers into the ears of the deaf mute, he was opening the soul of man to faith through the gifts of the Holy Spirit.” The people's response to this miracle testifies to Jesus' great care for others: He has done all things well.
No problem or burden was too much for Jesus' careful consideration. The Lord treats each of us with kindness and compassion and he calls us to treat one another in like kind. The Holy Spirit who dwells within us enables us to love as Jesus loves. Do you love others and treat them with considerateness as Jesus did?

We need a great Savior

We come to Christ in an hour of deep need. We abandon the boat of good works. We realize, like Peter, that spanning the gap between us and Jesus is feat too great for our feet. So we beg for help. Hear His voice. And step out in fear, hoping that our little faith will be enough.

Faith is desperate dive out of the sinking boat of human effort and a prayer that God will be there to pull us out of the water. Paul wrote about His kind of faith.

"For it is grace you have been saved, through faith-and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God-not by works, so that no one can boast."

Make all the difference

The main room of the house is where we entertain our visitors and family share a moment together. Hence, comfort is the main key in choosing living room furniture. Sofa sets are the most popular choice of living room furniture available in iron or wood material. Beautiful sofa sets inside the main room provide relaxing and luxurious lifestyle.

Another wonderful living room accent is the fireplace furniture. When the weather is cold, it is every one's wish to have a fireplace in the home The fireplace helps heat up the home, and provides warmth for the entire family.

By adding a portable electric fireplaces to our furniture, we are in essence turning the living room into an all year room essentially making our houses bigger without any worry of new construction at all. The kids can sit in the living room with comfortable modern wicker furniture and warmth for you to go to read a good book even when it is cool outside.

There are plenty of ways of improving our living room but one of the simplest is through fireplace furniture. Having new fireplace furniture such as electric fireplace and fire pits can make all the difference to our home.

Our furniture is one of the more expensive investments we make. It is important to have a plan in mind when you begin to furnish our home, that we are properly guided when we are looking for furniture pieces.

You're something special

We want to know how long God's love will endure. Not just on Easter Sunday when our shoes are shined and our hair is fixed. Not when I'm peppy and positive and ready to tackle world hunger. Not then. I know how he feels about me then. Even I like me then.

I want to know how he feels about me when I snap at anything that moves, when my thoughts are gutter-level, when my tounge is sharp enough to slice a rock. How does he feel about me then?
Can anything separate us from the love Christ has for us?

God answered our question before we asked it. So we'd see his answer, He lit the sky with a star. So we'd hear it, He filled the night with a choir; and so we'd believe it, He did it with no man had ever dreamed. He became flesh and dwelt among us.

He placed his hand on the shoulder of humanity and said. "You're something special".

The way to a new healing

At one point in my life, I had backslidden from good health practices. Because I had moved, I had left behind my church and my own "health coach." I was in a new environment, had stopped exercising, was not careful with my eating. As a result, I had gained 15 pounds.

God's Words convicted me of the sin in my life. I cried out to Him for forgiveness of my sin and for neglecting my body. I was commited to begin exercising, eating right and took Beta Glucan. Beta Glucan improves my immunity and helps my body combat viruses, bacterial infections, and parasites more effectively. It also control my cholesterol and reduce the risk of heart disease. It's all natural and safe, GreenPath Beta Glucan controls my cholesterol without the harmful side effects of prescription statin drugs. It didn't happen overnight, but in due time God healed me.

Have you cried unto the Lord with your burden and asked for healing? He will do the same for you, my friend.

tomorrow's Gospel: Life-giving words

Scripture: Luke 6:1-5
1 On a Sabbath, while he was going through the grainfields, his disciples plucked and ate some heads of grain, rubbing them in their hands.

2 But some of the Pharisees said, "Why are you doing what is not lawful to do on the Sabbath?"

3 And Jesus answered, "Have you not read what David did when he was hungry, he and those who were with him:

4 how he entered the house of God, and took and ate the bread of the Presence, which it is not lawful for any but the priests to eat, and also gave it to those with him?"

5 And he said to them, "The Son of man is lord of the Sabbath."

Reflections
What does the commandment "keep holy the Sabbath" require of us? Or better yet, what is the primary intention behind this command? The religious leaders confronted Jesus on this issue. The "Sabbath rest" was meant to be a time to remember and celebrate God's goodness and the goodness of his work, both in creation and redemption. It was a day set apart for the praise of

God, his work of creation, and his saving actions on our behalf. It was intended to bring everyday work to a halt and to provide needed rest and refreshment. Jesus' disciples are scolded by the scribes and Pharisees, not for plucking and eating corn from the fields, but for doing so on the Sabbath. In defending his disciples, Jesus argues from the scriptures that human need has precedence over ritual custom. In their hunger, David and his men ate of the holy bread offered in the Temple (1 Samuel 21:2-7).

On every Sabbath morning twelves loaves were laid before God on a golden table in the Holy Place. Each loaf represented one of the twelve tribes of Israel. No one was allowed to eat this bread except the priests because it represented the very presence of God. David understood that human need took precedence over rules and ritual regulations.

Why didn't the Pharisees recognize the claims of mercy over rules and regulations? Their zeal for ritual observance blinded them from the demands of charity. Jesus' reference to the bread of the Presence alludes to the true bread from heaven which he offers to all who believe in him.

Jesus, the Son of David, and the Son of Man, a title for the Messiah, declares that he is "Lord of the Sabbath." Jesus healed on the Sabbath and he showed mercy to those in need. All who are burdened can find true rest and refreshment in him. Do you seek rest and refreshment in the Lord and in the celebration of the Lord's Day?

Jesus Understands

Jesus knows how you feel. You're under the gun at work? Jesus knows how you feel. You've got more to do than is humanly possible? So did He. People take more from you than they give? Jesus understands. Your friends won't listen? Your relatives won't try, Jesus knows how you feel.

You are precious to him. So precious that he became like you so that you would come to him.

When you struggle He listens. When you yearn, He responds. When you question, He hears. He has been there.

Listen for His voice

Let me state something important. There is never a time during which Jesus is not speaking. Never. There is never a place in which Jesus is not present. Never. There is never a room so dark, an office so sophisticated, that the ever-present, ever-pursuing, relentlessly tender Friend is not there, tapping gently on the doors of our hearts-waiting to be invited in.

Few hear His voice. Fewer still open the door. But never interpret our numbness as His absence. For amidst the fleeting promises of pleasure is timeless promise His presence.

"Surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age"(Matt.28.20)

There is no chorus so loud that the voice of God cannot be heard, if we will but listen.

Make your inner beauty show outwardly

A flat and well-toned abdomen is something many of us strive for through exercise and weight control. Sometimes these methods cannot achieve our goals. Even individuals of otherwise normal body weight and proportion can develop an abdomen that protrudes or is loose and sagging.

Maybe a wholesome change could promote plastic surgery in our relationship with ourselves. Many people seem dissatisfied with some physical attribute or body feature and find this as a solution not only possible but also easier than ever. Plastic surgery goes by fixing any given detail driven you out of wits every time looked yourself in the mirror, as far as overall reshaping personal necessities.

A friend of mine wish to undergo tummy tuck. She preferred Mya wherein highly skilled and experienced surgeons based. According to her Mya offers a range of affordable, flexible finance packages. With MYA there are no hidden costs. MYA also believe that the correct aftercare is just important as the procedure itself and the price you pay includes all post operative checks so if you wanted to come back and see your nurse more than once it would be no extra cost. What a great relief! Isn't it?

Tummy Tuck removes excess fat and skin, and in most cases restores weakened or separated muscles creating an abdominal profile that is smoother and firmer. A tummy tuck is not a substitute for weight loss or an appropriate exercise program.

Although the results of a tummy tuck are technically permanent, the positive outcome can be greatly diminished by significant fluctuations in your weight. For this reason, individuals who are planning substantial weight loss or women who may be considering future pregnancies may be advised to postpone a tummy tuck.

tomorrow's Gospel: Knowledge of great love and truth

Scripture: Luke 5:33-39
33 And they said to him, "The disciples of John fast often and offer prayers, and so do the disciples of the Pharisees, but yours eat and drink."
34 And Jesus said to them, "Can you make wedding guests fast while the bridegroom is with them?
35 The days will come, when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast in those days."
36 He told them a parable also: "No one tears a piece from a new garment and puts it upon an old garment; if he does, he will tear the new, and the piece from the new will not match the old.
37 And no one puts new wine into old wineskins; if he does, the new wine will burst the skins and it will be spilled, and the skins will be destroyed.
38 But new wine must be put into fresh wineskins.
39 And no one after drinking old wine desires new; for he says, `The old is good.'"

Reflections
Which comes first, fasting or feasting? The disciples of John the Baptist were upset with Jesus' disciples because they did not fast. Fasting was one of the three most important religious duties, along with prayer and almsgiving. Jesus gave a simple explanation. There's a time for fasting and a time for feasting (or celebrating).

To walk as a disciple with Jesus is to experience a whole new joy of relationship akin to the joy of the wedding party in celebrating with the groom and bride their wedding bliss. But there also comes a time when the Lord's disciples must bear the cross of affliction and purification. For the disciple there is both a time for rejoicing in the Lord's presence and celebrating his goodness and a time for seeking the Lord with humility and fasting and for mourning over sin. Do you take joy in the Lord's presence with you and do you express sorrow and contrition for your sins?

Jesus goes on to warn his disciples about the problem of the "closed mind" that refuses to learn new things. Jesus used an image familiar to his audience – new and old wineskins. In Jesus' times, wine was stored in wineskins, not bottles. New wine poured into skins was still fermenting. The gases exerted gave pressure. New wine skins were elastic enough to take the pressure, but old wine skins easily burst because they were hard.

What did Jesus mean by this comparison? Are we to reject the old in place of the new? Just as there is a right place and a right time for fasting and for feasting, so there is a right place for the old as well as the new. Jesus says the kingdom of heaven is like a householder who brings out of his treasure what is new and what is old (Matthew 13:52). How impoverished we would be if we only had the Old Testament or the New Testament, rather than both.

The Lord gives us wisdom so we can make the best use of both the old and the new. He doesn't want us to hold rigidly to the past and to be resistant to the new work of his Holy Spirit in our lives. He wants our minds and hearts to be like the new wine skins – open and ready to receive the new wine of the Holy Spirit. Are you eager to grow in the knowledge and understanding of God's word and plan for your life?

Finding essential piece

It is a fact that no other place on earth can you find the same comfort your home can give you. It is the final destination of a weary body who seeks solace after a hectic day at work. Home is where we feel secure and safe at all times, day and night. Apart from safety concerns at home, home-owners love to add décor and furnishings to make it more beautiful especially the bedroom.

Bedroom is considered the most private area of the home. It is where we sleep, spend time if we want to be alone and intimate moments are stored. It needs a lot of beautifying and beautiful furniture to keep the place tidy. After a long day outside, you want to put your self to sleep in a comfortable bed such as the Metal frame beds provide a classic tone inside the room. While platform beds with wood frame are designed to make your room a place of elegance and sophistication.

Another essential piece inside the bedroom is xl twin air mattress. It is said to be the most versatile bedroom furniture because it can be use if having guests over. But, buying air beds can be complicated. Thanks, there is airmatressinfo website wherein they compare various air mattresses and give us links to a number of different places where we can buy an air bed or an inflatable mattress.

No secret from God

Have you been there? Have you felt the ground of conviction give way beneath your feet? The ledge crumbles, your eyes widen, and down you go. Poof!

Now what do you do? When we fall, we can dismiss it. We can deny it. We can distort it. Or we can deal with it.

We can keep no secrets from God. Confession is not telling God what we did. He already knows. Confession is simply agreeing with God that our acts our wrong.

How can God heal what we deny? How can God grant us pardon when we don't admit our guilt? Ahh, there's that word: guilt. Isn't that what we avoid? Guilt. Isn't that we detest? But is guilt bad? What does guilt imply if not that we know right from wrong, that we aspire to be better than we are. That's what guilt is: a healthy regret for telling God one thing and doing another.

See what God has done

How vital that we pray, armed with the knowledge that God is in heaven. Pray with any lesser conviction and your prayers are timid, shallow, and hollow. But spend some time walking in the work shop of the heavens, seeing what God has done, and watch how your prayers are energized.

Behold the sun! Every square yard of the sin is constantly emitting 130,000 horse power, or the equivalent of 450- eight-cylinder automobile engines. And yet our sun, as powerful as it is, is but one minor star in the 100 billion orbs which make up our Milky Way Galaxy. Hold a dime in your fingers and extend it's arm length toward the sky, allowing it to eclipse your vision, and you will block out fifteen million stars from your view. By showing us the heavens Jesus is showing us his Father's workshop. He taps us on the shoulder and say's "Your father can handle that for you"

To see what is good

Everyone wants their children to be happy, to feel good about themselves and their lives. Often most obvious focus on how to achieve that is to try to provide the resources and experiences we think will help children thrive. Ultimately, though, no event and no purchase you can give a child will matter nearly as much as the lessons you provide and the support you offer. You are by far the most important thing you have to offer.

If you're planning a vacation, or just thinking about where you might like to go with your family, you should consider Myrtle Beach Guide, from tourism, to golf, to where to have a good time on the weekends. There are plenty of places to stay in Myrtle Beach, such as family hotels in myrtle beach ranging from the cheaper end to luxury accommodations. I tell you, you won't have any trouble finding a reservation especially if you plan ahead. The most important factor you should think about is the distance between the hotel and the attractions you plan on going to.

People who are happiest with their family life have not lucked into perfect families, they've chosen to focus on the things they find satisfying. In absolutely days of existence, you could find something that would bother you and something that would delight you. Let yourself see what's good all around you .

tomorrow's Gospel: Do not be afraid! Fill your heart with love and compassion

Scripture: Luke 5:1-11
1 While the people pressed upon him to hear the word of God, he was standing by the lake of Gennes'aret.
2 And he saw two boats by the lake; but the fishermen had gone out of them and were washing their nets.
3 Getting into one of the boats, which was Simon's, he asked him to put out a little from the land. And he sat down and taught the people from the boat.
4 And when he had ceased speaking, he said to Simon, "Put out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch."
5 And Simon answered, "Master, we toiled all night and took nothing! But at your word I will let down the nets."
6 And when they had done this, they enclosed a great shoal of fish; and as their nets were breaking,
7 they beckoned to their partners in the other boat to come and help them. And they came and filled both the boats, so that they began to sink.
8 But when Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus' knees, saying, "Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord."
9 For he was astonished, and all that were with him, at the catch of fish which they had taken;
10 and so also were James and John, sons of Zeb'edee, who were partners with Simon. And Jesus said to Simon, "Do not be afraid; henceforth you will be catching men."
11 And when they had brought their boats to land, they left everything and followed him.

Reflections
Why did Jesus perform the miracle of the great catch of fish? No doubt the great crowd of people who had pressed upon Jesus had something to do with this miracle. They were very hungry for God and were eager to hear his word. Jesus wanted to use this occasion to teach his disciples an important lesson. Although Simon was wearied from a night of fruitless toil, he nonetheless pressed upon Jesus for his word of command: At your word I will let down the nets. When you meet disappointment and failure, do you press upon the Lord, like Simon, to hear his word and to receive his command?

This incident tells us an important truth about how God works in and through each of us for his glory. God expects of us greater things than we can do by ourselves. When we cooperate in his works, we accomplish far beyond what we can do on our own. Therese of Lisieux, A Carmelite nun who died of tuberculosis at the age of twenty-four, wrote to a friend: "..Jesus has so incomprehensible a love for us that he wills that we have a share with him in the salvation of souls. He wills to do nothing without us.

The Creator of the universe awaits the prayer of a poor little soul to save other souls redeemed like it at the price of all his Blood." When God's word is spoken his kingdom is revealed and his power is released. When people respond to God's word with faith and obedience they are changed and made "a new creation" in Christ (2 Corinthians 5:17).

God chooses ordinary people, like you and me, as his ambassadors and he uses the ordinary circumstances of our daily lives and work situations to draw others into his kingdom. Jesus speaks the same message to us today: we will "catch people" for the kingdom of God if we allow the light of Jesus Christ to shine through us. God wants others to see the light of Christ in us in the way we live, speak, and witness the joy of the gospel.

Paul the Apostles says, But thanks be to God, who in Christ Jesus always leads us in triumph, and through us spreads the fragrance of the knowledge of him everywhere. For we are the aroma of Christ to God among those who are being saved and among those who are perishing (2 Cor. 2:15). Do you witness to those around you the joy of the gospel and do you pray for your neighbors, co-workers, and relatives that they may come to know the Lord Jesus Christ and grow in the knowledge of his love?

A home for your heart

Chances are you've given little thought to housing your soul. We create elaborate houses for our bodies, but our souls are relegated to a hillside shanty where the night winds chills us and the rain soaks us. Is it any wonder the world is so full of cold hearts?

Doesn't have to be this way. We don't have to live outside. It's not God's plan for your heart to roam as a Bedouin. God wants you to move in out of the cold and live with him. Under His roof there is space available. At His table a plate is set. In His living room a wingback chair is reserved just for you. And He'd like you to take up residence in His house. Why would He want you to share His home? Simple, He's your father.

God of Purpose

[Jesus] refused to be guided by anything other than his high call. His heart was purposeful. Most lives aim at nothing in particular and achieve it. Jesus aimed at one goal- to save humanity from sin. He could summarize his life with one sentence " The Son of Man came to seek to save the lost" (Luke 19:10 RSV). Jesus was so focused on his task that he knew when to say "It is finished" (John 19:30). But he was not so focused on his goal that he was unpleasant.

Quite the contrary. How pleasant were His thoughts! Children couldn't resist Jesus. He could find beauty in lilies, joy in worship, and possibilities in problems he would spend days with multitudes of sick people and still feel sorry for them. He spent over three decades wading around the muck and mire of our sin yet still saw enough beauty in us to die for our mistakes.

tomorrow's Gospel: He guided and healed us

Scripture: Luke 4:38-44
38 And he arose and left the synagogue, and entered Simon's house. Now Simon's mother-in-law was ill with a high fever, and they besought him for her.

39 And he stood over her and rebuked the fever, and it left her; and immediately she rose and served them.

40 Now when the sun was setting, all those who had any that were sick with various diseases brought them to him; and he laid his hands on every one of them and healed them.

41 And demons also came out of many, crying, "You are the Son of God!" But he rebuked them, and would not allow them to speak, because they knew that he was the Christ.

42 And when it was day he departed and went into a lonely place. And the people sought him and came to him, and would have kept him from leaving them;

43 but he said to them, "I must preach the good news of the kingdom of God to the other cities also; for I was sent for this purpose."

44 And he was preaching in the synagogues of Judea.

Reflections
Who do you take your troubles to? Jesus' disciples freely brought their troubles to him because they found him ready and able to deal with any difficulty, affliction, or sickness which they encountered. When Simon Peter brought Jesus to his home for the Sabbath meal (right after Jesus preached in the synagogue in Capernaum), his mother-in-law was instantly healed because Jesus heard Simon's prayer.
Jesus could not avoid drawing a crowd wherever he went. No one who asked Jesus for help was left disappointed. Jesus' numerous healings and exorcisims demonstrated the power and authority of his word, the "good news of the kingdom of God." When he rebuked the fever, it immediately left. When he rebuked the demons, they left as well. Why did the demons shudder at Jesus' presence? They recognized that he was the Christ, the Son of God and that he had power to destroy their kingdom by releasing those bound by it. Jesus came to set us free from bondage to sin and evil. Do you seek freedom in Christ and trust in his power to set you free?

When Jesus and the disciples sought a lonely place to regroup and rest, they found instead a crowd waiting for them! Did they resent this intrusion on their hard-earned need for privacy and refreshment? Jesus certainly didn't but welcomed them with open-arms. Jesus put human need ahead of everything else.

His compassion showed the depths of God's love and concern for all who are truly needy. Jesus gave the people the word of God and he healed them physically as well as spiritually. We can never intrude upon God nor exhaust his generosity and kindness. He is ever ready to give to those who earnestly seek him out.

Do you allow Jesus to be the Lord and Healer in your personal life, family, and community? Approach him with expectant faith. God's healing power restores us not only to health but to active service and care of others. There is no trouble he does not want to help us with and there is no bondage he can't set us free from. Do you take your troubles to him with expectant faith that he will help you?
